The birth of Bundar Kalamkari is a story woven with heritage, craftsmanship, and dedication. This distinctive form of Kalamkari art originated in Machilipatnam (known historically as "Bandar" or "Bundar") in Andhra Pradesh, India. Unlike other styles, Bundar Kalamkari is recognized for its intricate patterns and rich use of natural dyes, traditionally using hand-block printing methods. This ancient art form traces its roots back centuries, with local artisans initially creating designs inspired by mythology, nature, and cultural symbols.

However, it was in the mid-20th century that Bundar Kalamkari underwent a transformative revival. In 1968, a small group of passionate individuals began working with the art to bring it to a broader audience. This effort came at a time when no one involved had formal education, yet their innate dedication to learning and mastering Kalamkari allowed them to create high-quality handcrafted textiles that began to attract attention.

These artisans aimed not only to preserve the technique but also to empower unskilled laborers and local women, many of whom had limited access to employment due to the economic challenges in the region. Their commitment turned Bundar Kalamkari into more than an art—it became a means of livelihood, a foundation for community support, and a source of cultural pride.

Initially producing bed sheets, lungis, saris, curtains, and pillow covers, the Bundar Kalamkari artisans gradually expanded their repertoire as the demand for these unique textiles grew. The success of these efforts helped establish Bundar Kalamkari as a distinguished craft, and the artisans gained acclaim both locally and internationally.

The journey of Bundar Kalamkari reached new heights when  Geographical Indication (G.I.) Tag in 2018, marking Machilipatnam as the authentic source of this art. This recognition was crucial in protecting the heritage of Bundar Kalamkari against imitations and solidified its standing as a significant cultural and economic resource.
